Fortrea Clinical Research Unit, Leeds

Fortrea Clinical Research Unit, Leeds

We assisted in the revival of an existing building at the historic Drapers Yard in Leeds to create a new UK Centre of Excellence for Fortrea. The project involved the refurbishment of a concrete-framed two-storey 1950s warehouse building into an advanced clinical research unit offering new laboratories, offices, and a roof-level amenity space.

Bradford Royal Infirmary, NeoNatal Home from Home Unit

Bradford Royal Infirmary, NeoNatal Home from Home Unit

The project involves the design of a new standalone building adjacent to the existing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The facility will provide overnight accommodation and support spaces for families with babies in intensive care. The scheme is being developed in partnership with the Sick Children’s Trust, who will co-fund and operate the facility once completed. The building sits on a sloping site and includes a small amount of internal refurbishment within the existing NICU footprint. The project is currently at RIBA Stage 4 (Technical Design).

Ophthalmology Outpatients, Barnsley

Ophthalmology Outpatients, Barnsley

Adept were appointed to deliver civil and structural engineering design services for Phase 1 of Barnsley Hospital’s ‘Health on the High Street‘ programme, understood to be the UK’s largest relocation of hospital outpatient services. Aire Court Health Centre, Middleton, Leeds

Aire Court Health Centre, Middleton, Leeds

To refurbish the internal space so that it could function as a modern medical facility and also to provide a light rich and aesthetically pleasing entrance area to an existing building. The patients using the existing facility were relocated prior to construction commencing, however, a number of the administrators remained so it was necessary to coordinate all work carefully. Three community services operating in South Leeds were to relocate and use the building for their needs, alongside older people’s services. The project was completed in 2011.

Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre, Wigan

Aspull Health and Wellbeing Centre, Wigan

We provided Civil and Structural design services for this two-storey newbuild Health and Wellbeing Hub, which merged an existing surgery and community clinic onto the same site. This striking, focal point building provides modern, flexible, fit-for-purpose facilities and is in direct response to the government’s increased push for local community-based primary healthcare. The works were planned to enable the existing surgery to continue to operate throughout the construction stages.

B Braun Car Park & CAPS Unit, Sheffield

B Braun Car Park & CAPS Unit, Sheffield

Adept were appointed by B Braun as civil and structural engineers to deliver works including a new multi-storey car park facility and a warehouse extension to the Central Admixture Pharmacy Services (CAPS) unit with a new mezzanine office over the existing second floor warehouse.

Meanwood Health Centre, Leeds

Meanwood Health Centre, Leeds

The refurbishment to the existing structure was challenging to achieve as the original construction was load bearing masonry, with most of the internal walls continuing into the roof space to support roof purlins. It was necessary to carry out an extensive survey of the roof space prior to the design work, in order to advise the architect correctly with regards to what was achievable for the given budget. To one of the existing wings where all internal walls were removed Adept designed steel frames to support the masonry and roof above, whilst advising of the length the perimeter buttress piers needed to be to resist wind forces. The structural alterations in other areas were not as substantial and isolated steel beams from the existing structure were used where necessary.

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, COVID Ward

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, COVID Ward

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust required the fast-track conversion of an existing ward into a dedicated, self-contained ward treating patients with Covid-19. The programme was expedited by 25-30% to ensure completion of the works before an anticipated winter surge in additional patients to the hospital. We were appointed to advise on structural alterations to the existing fabric for the installation of specialist mechanical equipment for use by the future patients. We also provided remote, daily support to the entire design and construction team while the works were underway on site during the pandemic.
